workin' and practicin'

Well, we're halfway through February, and the last 2 weeks have been interesting.  ESUMS middle and high have been really rewarding experiences thus far and an interesting contrast to Amistad High.  At ESUMS High, we have access to an unbelievable gym as well as the help of a gym teacher, allowing us to teach tennis with nets (imagine that!).  Our class of 16 boys and ONE girl is really enthusiastic, engaged, and willing to participate.  I'm wondering if this is because we teach them in the morning (9 AM).

At the middle school, we also have mostly young men, and a smaller class size (around 13). We have also enlisted the help of some amazing volunteers from the Beta Mu Sigma fraternity at Southern Connecticut State University.  We're lucky enough to have these guys come volunteer once every 2 weeks or so through the spring.

In general, each school brings with it a different experience.  Amistad had a very systematized classroom management system and schedule; on the flip side, the students were at times tired because we taught them at the very end of their long, demanding day.  ESUMS is a little more free form in both its management system and approach, and the high school is in its first year, meaning that creating the schedule was a little trickier. On the other hand, we teach at both schools in the morning, meaning that the kids are a little more enthusiastic and willing to participate.

Next week New Haven Public Schools in on vacation, so we look forward to getting back into the classroom Feb. 27th.  Have a great week everybody!

February = new schools, big plans

Holy February, Batman!  It's 65 degrees in New Haven.  Besides ridiculous weather, lots is happening with Sportsometry in the next few weeks.

  • Amistad HS finished up yesterday.  We are grateful for a productive, excellently organized elective class, and we really enjoyed getting to know our 19 Sportsometry scholars.  We wish them luck on the CAPT in a few months!
  • ESUMS Middle and High Schools started TODAY!  We'll be teaching 7th and 9th grade and introducing a new sport (what's up volleyball!) to the high school.  Weirdly, this will carry us to the end of the school year - hard to think about even with this spring weather.
  • We were able to establish a table at the Southern Connecticut State University volunteer fair yesterday; we're looking to partner with a fraternity, the womene's rugby team, and hopefully several other individuals!
  • We met with the New Haven Parks and Rec department for a possible summer camp partnership.

A LOT is going on down here on Whitney Ave, and we couldn't be more excited!

New digs...

We're all moved in to our beautiful new office - two offices, conference room, kitchen, and bathroom....this is a big deal for us. Painted a fabulous color of "desert willow" aka sort of pink with help from two very, very helpful dudes (gracias Peter and Ben!).  It's great to see Sportsometry expanding in a literal sense, and as I write this post from an office with a WINDOW, I couldn't be more grateful to the people who help make this possible.  Have a great day!

Happy New Year!

It's 2012!  Sportsometry is looking forward to lots of big things this year - hopefully starting up a summer program, getting a few grants in the works, and continuing to expand our reach in Connecticut.  Amistad started the year off with a bang, with the announcement of our MVPs from tennis, a new sport (frisbee!), and a visit from Kriti Modi, our Yale SOM Board Fellow.  We hope everyon stays warm- it's FREEZING here in New Haven!

New Yale School of Management Board Fellow

We at Sportsometry are extremely excited to announce a new partnership with the Yale SOM's Board Fellows Program.  We'll be working with Kriti Modi, a first year MBA student, for the next 12-15 months.  Her role will be to sit on the board and help us identify and address key issues as we grow and change.  This is very, very exciting news for us!
