This summer, Sportsometry has added Leah Rivers to our team of instructors. Leah comes to us through the City of New Haven’s Youth@Work program. This spring, Leah graduated from Wilbur Cross High School and will be attending St. John’s University as a freshman in the fall where she will run track and field.
Leah is an extremely accomplished athlete as she has been running since the age of 6 and is the Connecticut state champion for girls indoor track in the 600 meter event. She was a member of the New Haven Age Group Track Club for 7 years and had the opportunity to travel all over the country to compete including New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Louisiana, and North Carolina. At the age of 9, Leah became an All-American athlete taking 5th place at the Disney World USATF Cross Country Nationals in Florida. She again placed as an All-American at the AAU Junior Olympics outdoor championship in Norfolk, Virginia where she placed 3rd in the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.
In 2014, Leah was a part of the Wilbur Cross state champion and State Opens championship team. Throughout her high school career, she has been an SCC champion, Sectional West champion, CT state champion, and first team All-SCC selection in the 600 meter event and 4×4 relay team. In her senior year, she qualified for New Englands in the 600 meter event and placed 6th overall.
In addition to her athletic accomplishments, community service is very important to Leah. She was a part of the Elm City Youth Club where she participated in Breast Cancer Awareness walks and spent time doing community service work at a local home for the elderly.
Leah also has very strong academics. She graduated middle school as valedictorian and continued to excel throughout high school. Leah graduated Wilbur Cross as an AP student in the top 10% of her class with a 4.3 GPA. She is excited to continue her education at St. John’s in the fall where she plans to study biology with a minor in either theater or dance. She looks forward to the opportunity of studying abroad during her undergrad and has aspirations of pursuing a future in naturopathic medicine.
We are thrilled to welcome Leah to our team and know she will be a great addition!
