Jean B. Mauro
Jean is an attorney (semi-retired). Jean earned his B. Eng. (Yale, 1958), MBA (NYU, 1966), JD (University of Maryland, 1972). Jean has 10 years of experience in chemical research and development and over 45 years of experience in the corporate practice of intellectual property law. He retired in 1998 as Managing Patent Counsel at Union Carbide Corp. He is a founding trustee of several non-profits and continues to do some pro bono legal work. He is also a member of a start-up LLC in the pharmaceutical industry. Jean’s personal interests include Italian culture and art, medieval and Renaissance history, and classical music.
Chawwadee earned a B.S. in economics from Yale in 2000 and is the Head Women’s Golf Coach. Her experience in assessing the statistics of her teams’ progress shows her understanding of the connection of using athletics to supplement students’ understanding of math and science concepts. As a board member, Chawwadee provides insight into fundraising based on her responsibilities as a coach. She also provides ideas working with Sportsometry to appeal to administrators at various schools and after school programs and camps. Chawwadee adds the perspective of working with young athletes, as she also runs camps in New Jersey and Florida.
Janie is the Director of Biology for Yale’s Center for Molecular Discovery. In this role, she works with biomedical researchers and helps them develop and perform experiments that may lead to future treatments for the diseases they study. Janie graduated from Dartmouth College (A.B., 1995) and Yale University (M.Phil 1998, Ph.D. 2000), focusing her studies in the physical sciences. Sportsometry® combines two of her lifelong interests: commitment to exercise and experience-based learning. In her own life, exercise has improved her health, life balance, outlook, and connections with other active people.
Stephanie Burset graduated from Princeton University in 2009 and was Executive Director of Sportsometry from August 2011 to July 2012. Prior to working at Sportsometry, she was a Teach for America corps member, teaching 7th and 8th-grade history in Bridgeport, Connecticut at Achievement First Bridgeport Academy. After Sportsometry, she earned her Master’s of Business Administration at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in marketing and management. She is currently a Senior Associate Brand Manager at Mars, Inc. in Nashville, TN.
Rebecca received her B.A. from Manhattanville College with Departmental Honors in Political Science and her J.D. cum laude from Quinnipiac University School of Law. She is a member of the Estates and Probate Section and Elder Law Sections of the Connecticut Bar Association and also is a member of the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys. Rebecca has lectured on special needs planning for various organizations. Additionally, she has, on numerous occasions, provided public service announcements on behalf of the Department of Children and Families to advocate for the foster and adoption of special needs children. Rebecca resides in New Haven County with her husband and their four children. She enjoys the balance of having four great kids and a challenging career at Day Pitney, LLP in their New Haven office.
Juan A. Figueroa is a lifelong advocate with a successful background in law, policy, and civil rights at the national, state, and local levels. His legal career includes staff attorney for the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, Connecticut Assistant Attorney General and President and General Counsel of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (now Latino Justice, PRLDEF) in New York City. Mr. Figueroa served as State Representative for Hartford’s Third Assembly District and in 2010 became the first Latino in Connecticut to run for Governor. He was President of the Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut and served as Chief of Staff to Hartford Mayor, Pedro Segarra. Currently, he serves as President and CEO of the Jefferson Foundation in Missouri.
John A. Taylor, Jr.
John is the Executive Director of the Booker T. Washington Academy, a Connecticut State Department of Education High-Quality School of Distinction and Category 1 ranked school, located in New Haven, CT. John earned a Bachelors's Degree in Education, and a Masters's Degree in Educational Leadership, from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA. He also holds an Executive Leadership Certification in Strategic Design for Charter Schools from Harvard University. John has more than twenty years of classroom and school leadership experience. Prior to Booker T. Washington Academy, John was the Founding Principal at Green Tech High Charter School in Albany, NY. Green Tech is a single-gender college prep high school created to focus exclusively on preparing males for college and career in a city where less than ten percent of black and Latino males graduate with a Regents Diploma. Under John’s leadership, Green Tech High School student performance on the New York State Regents exams in ELA, Math, and Science exceeded state averages. Additionally, 100 percent of Green Tech graduates earned, at minimum, Regents Diplomas, and all were accepted into two-year or four-year colleges or universities.
Prior to coming to the Booker T. Washington Academy, John served as Executive Director of School Turnaround, a practice area of the Rensselaerville Institute. John has also served as Vice President of Membership and Services for the Northeast Charter Schools Network, overseeing operations and working directly with charter schools to assess school performance and identify solutions to drive overall school improvement while increasing student achievement.
Outside of the school setting, John is an avid boater and devoted father.
Before enrolling at Yale School of Management, Elliott was a project manager at Voya Investment Management, which is based in New York City, responsible for analyzing and managing large-scale strategic projects focusing on business processes and technology. Prior to this position, Elliott was an analyst at UBS Wealth Management. He earned bachelor's degrees in Economics and China and Asia Pacific Studies from Cornell University. He enjoys sports, traveling, and new experiences.
